Sorry Chris for the delay in responding. No I had recently re-installed
Ubuntu and I had not carried over any system configuration at all. The
machine was pristine. I copied all my home account data back. A week or
so later I was working merrily along in OpenOffice and I hit the print
button., afte

I think I may be confused. You said you printed to a non-existent
printer? Did the printer still show up in the print dialog but was not
connected to the computer, or how did you cause it to try to print to a
non-existent printer?
