this appears to only affect usb image made in windows 7 using pendrive or
unetbootin. usb made in linux using dd works as expected.

on boot selecting usb in non-uefi mode results in a beep and non boot of

selecting non-uefi option will not boot livecd - 12.04.1 boots using this method
selecting uefi boots too live environment allowing install - upon reboot no
grub menu available and system boots windows
