I too have this problem (lack of sound). At least with VLC and Movie
Player. Movie player says it can't find an appropriate codec before it
starts playing. I assume it means audio codec because the video plays
just fine. My test movie is the Amazon clip from Microsofts WMV site.
Plays fine on XP, b
The same symptoms with some movies.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I tried different players: VLC, Totem, Gnome
MPlayer, Xine. Totem offers to search for codecs, but finds nothing.
I've installed a Windows system in the virtual machine - video in my link has
the sound (so there's no error with encoding by movie-maker or downloadin
I don't have sound in movies with windows media audio codec.
Example: http://dl.eve-files.com/media/0805/Failbear1.1.wmv (this is a
big file ~450mb). It's audio is said to be encoded with WMA Version 9
codec.

ditto, i am still having difficulties with a number of wmv files.
Although now some of the files that had not produced sound at all now
playback with sound in vlc. curiouser and curiouser said alice.

On Gusty I do not have any sound with vlc, totem,...
avidemux tells me that the audio codec is unknown.
Is someone can have the sound on an other system to know if the soundtrack is
broken?
