I'm sorry, reading the error message the second time I realized that it
is not as exact as I thought it was. It actually reads:

I'd like to reopen this bug. It just happened to me on a brand new
Ubuntu 9.04 system, twice within one week.
The update manager displays the exact same error message as in the
original bug report. 'sudo apt-get upgrade' ran successfully.
The only customization I have made to my updates is in the
same problem on gutsy (beta).
tried:
lsof | grep /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
got not output back.
used Shirish Agarwal's ( 2007-06-28 ) solution:
sudo killall apt apt-get aptitude
and resolved (no reboot/logout were needed).
let me know if I can supply any further info.
good luck with the final fix!
kill all worked in circumventing the lock error, although the output of
kill all was 'no process killed'
~$ sudo killall apt apt-get aptitude
[sudo] password for xyz:
aptitude: no process killed
~$
And I thought that ubuntu was way less buggy than Fedora...

Happened to me , however i tried 5 minutes later and it worked. Maybe ubuntu is
checking for updates automatically as soon as the OS boots.

Happened to me again, the only way out I guess is logging out & back
again. Even doing a killall for apt apt-get aptitude doesn't get me
anywhere although I know its bad practise to do killall for package
managers. This happens to me during sudo aptitude upgrade & not update.
Doing a
sudo lsof |
This one happens to me quite sometimes. Sometimes giving a sudo killall
apt apt-get aptitude does the trick sometimes it doesn't.
lsof sometimes shows sometimes doesn't. Subscribing to the bug just in
case I can give more output.
