I fixed it by following this guide
boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC_on_Debian
sudo ln -s /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg
/home//gui_rpc_auth.cfg
sudo ln -s /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg
/var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg
sudo chown boinc:boinc /home//gui_rpc_auth
For me selecting a binary does not even work, boinc refuses to add them
to the list.
