I had similar problems in Edgy but it was solved in Feisty. Can you
check if it works in Gutsy or Hardy?

Sorry the Repro1 is:
- login with a different user from the one who has "administer" privileges.
- Alt+F1
- login with one user who has "administer" privileges.
- logout.
- Alt+f7 => I get a black screen.
and Repro2 is:
- Switch user.
- From the new session, try to switch back to the first user
