Same here on an Inspirion 8200. When upgrading from Edgy to Feisty, my
screen stayed blank, however, I could log in and would here the welcome
sound.
* Problem:
The nvidia driver does not use the DFP-0 as default monitor
* Solution:
Add
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP-0"
to the Device

I have never manually intalled nvidia drivers on linux. I used adept to install
nvidia-glx.
