scanbuttond has been superseded by the scanbd package. Please install
that and report any problems you might find. If you are not on vivid,
you can get the package from my stable LTS PPA.

in ubuntu 12.10 by default scanbuttond service is running as saned user
(/etc/default/scanbuttond)
a quick workaround is to add saned to scanner group :
> sudo adduser saned scanner
and restart the service.
but I don't know if it is the preferred solution.
