Raymond, thank you for the helpful suggestion. I started alsamixer in a terminal session and tried your suggestion. I started the machine in Lucid and ran alsamixer. The settings were: Master 80, PCM 89, Synth 81, CD 81. I started the machine in Precise and changed the alsamixer to these values
