Mike, it is indeed 2.11.x from Lucid B1 (and 2.10.x from Karmic still
works fine on the same shares).

This may now be a regression in Lucid. This was not a problem with
gThumb in Karmic (for me) but happens on all 3 machines I have running
Lucid B1. The mounts are nautilus/gvfs. As the OP stated, it picks up
thumbnails just fine in folder view, but if you double-click to view the
single/full image

However, your question triggered a memory that I had that drive set up
as a shared drive via the Ubuntu admin menu. I deleted the share and now
it seems to be working properly.
Not sure if that that's a different bug or user error :)
