Assuming you haven't found a working method to get your GUI going again...
After a failed run, use ctrl-alt-f2 to log in to a virtual terminal.
Take a copy of the requested files (e.g. copy them into your home
directory) and then use a tool like nano to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and
