Worth noting: the first drawer expansion immediately after creating a
new drawer has no delay. All following drawer expansions have a delay.

I worked around the drawer opening delay by hardcoding the animation
time to 0 in gnome-panel sources. I don't think this can be considered a
proper fix, but at least it makes drawers usable again. Patch attached.

I've reverted to no visual effects after Lucid upgrade (I'd forgotten
the reason I'd disabled this in Jaunty - but remembered after I went
digging to resolve the reluctant draw open issue).
Would be nice to get this one fixed at some point - it's amazing how
even a simple usability issue like this

FWIW, it looks like Gnome 2.29.91 (tested in Ubuntu Lucid) fixes this
issue. It has a very small delay but it isn't anywhere near as bad -
looks like it just takes a second to slide out (probably making it
actually look like an opening drawer - very smooth).

I think we all still care; we've just given up hope of anyone fixing it.
My workaround is to create a "Quick Start" folder in the Gnome menu,
populate it with the same apps I would have put in the drawer, then put
that folder into my toolbar. The look is quite a bit different than the
drawer, but
For anyone who still cares, I've come across something of a workaround.
As was said above, if you disable animations through gconf-editor, the
drawer shows up, just in the wrong place. To solve that problem, I've
taken to forcing the drawer to the right place using Compiz's force
window feature.

Shell and such.

This is actually really sad.
It seems like the nature of the problem is well understood. There is a
ton of confirmation. The exact area that needs to be fixed has been
identified, but the responsible parties just point fingers at each
other.

I confirm this on 9.04 as well. Very annoying. If I have to choose
between compiz and drawer I stick with compiz and ditch the drawer.
Which is a shame as it is a very nice and useful feature when it works.

I stopped using drawers a long time ago due to this bug. It's a real
shame that netbook users (which place a high value on screen real
estate) have been unable to use this feature due to the unrealistically
slow performance. If the sliding animation is the problem, why not
remove it completely and

numerous releases of Ubuntu as well as a 'stock' F11 install without

This drawer delay has been around FOREVER and no movement whatsoever
has been made on it. It seems as if the bug is well documented with
various cases where the behavior does and does not appear (seems to be
tied to compiz as the drawers behave as expected when compiz is turned

I get the same experience with Jaunty (9.04).
However, there even seems to be a delay/pause in opening the drawer after
Compiz is turned off. The delay without compiz is much reduced though - less
than a second, I'd guess.

I can confirm the issue with the long (2 seconds in my case) delay
between clicking the drawer and completely expanding the drawer.

opening other panel items (tomboy, menu, right-click, ..) does not give

I don't have to click 3 times to open the drawer but I do have the 3sec

Yes, this is a particularly irksome bug.
One clue:
1. Add the System Monitor applet to your panel and configure it to
display disk usage in a graph.
2. Reboot (to clear out disk cache)
3. Make sure disk usage is low (wait for bootup to settle down, have a
lot of memory :-)
4. Click on a Drawer
I can confirm that the delay aspect of this drawer bug still is
affecting Hardy Heron. I have Normal Visual Effects checked (compiz-
fusion) under the Appearance Preferences. when I click on a drawer
applet that I have added to the gnome-panel, there is a slight pause
before the drawer extends an

the wrong position of the drawer's panel is another bug which I think is

Nevertheless it is perhaps useful to have a workaround for the drawer-
delay-bug, if the wrong-position-bug gets fixed so that disabling
(disclaimer: new to Linux)
Same for Hardy Alpha 5 (creating new drawer, opens fine the first time, opening
the second time = 1 sec delay before fully expand)-- makes drawers unusable =(

No, it is not, at least from the user perspective they are totally
unrelated.
This one only affects drawers, and happens only when using compiz (up to
and including Hardy A3, per the above report). The other one only
affects the panel menu and is a pain with or without compiz.

I experience the bug (delayed (about 1 sec.) reaction of the drawer
applet) currently with compiz 1:0.6.0+git20071004-0ubuntu2.
Interestingly the drawer worked correctly together with compiz before an
update, i think, the compiz version it worked with was
1:0.5.2+git20070928-0ubuntu1 .

I don't know what the beryl folks intended with this "focus stealing
prevention" but something has gone wrong
I have almost exactly the same problem in 7.04
I have a drawer with the Internet icon (Applications > Internet) and has
the three IEs4Linux links in there.
The difference with my case is that it always delays.
Ari, you may have to click several times because of focus stealing.

Hi, I made some more testing. The three-click-to-open and the slowness
when opening happens when using Beryl as window manager. When using
Metacity all is good. So this looks like a Beryl interaction problem.
Again, reproducible 100% of the time in different machines.
