Marking this bug as invalid, as the bug happened due to some strange
combination of mysql updates and installation but none use. The update
scripts of cacti can not be expected to work in this case.

OK, I found the problem.
There was an old (never configured) install of cacti onboard, which had
been updated as new versions came along.
Purging and reinstalling cleared the issue. Clearly something broke
during the upgrade sequences, but as it had never been used before
