I have had this issue for a long time too. I can't seem to find what is
the trigger for the bug, but I get it frequently.
I am on Ubuntu 14.04, with NVIDIA proprietary drivers.

It affects me too. My graphic card is Intel® Sandybridge Mobile
On the other machine which has the nVidia card, installing proprietary drivers
fixed the problem.
I am under Unity on Ubuntu 13.04
