Strange this is, all I have to do is immediately restart after booting,
and media will play at the right speed---until the next time I boot ...

I'm having the same problem: After doing the latest upgrades with Update
Manager, suddenly sound and video playback is slow!
Looks like a master clock or something is just running at a low speed.
I cannot run envy24control either and get the same message as Ader.
I am running Ubuntu 9.04 (guest)
I have the same issue. It was no problem in Ubuntu 8.04, but now I've
upgraded to 8.10... That was a bad idea.
The sound starts out as normal and fine, but at some point it suddenly
starts being played in slow motion as described further up.
I cannot run envy24control. It only says "No ICE1712 ca
I have no clue how to get at the master clock, so I'll have to switch
back to window os, because if there is no solution for this problem,
which there was not before gg, it is the only way untill this os grows
up.

Okay, I found a similar solution like jtappin. I turned off 'Locked' in
'Rate State', switched the Master Clock to 'int 96000' and turned
'Locked' on again. Master Clock switched back to 'int 48000' and
everything is fine, even the sound quality is better now.

The same here. Is anybody working on that issue?

I am running into a similar issue.
I have attached a .tar.bz2 file that will extract a bunch of the info into the
directory cabal-alsa-info (name of my box)

Additional note:
I've now fixed the problem on my system (at least until I have to
reboot).
It turns out that the "Master Clock" in the Hardware Settings tab in
envy24control had defaulted to 22050, instead of 44100 -- resetting
there resolves the problem [I'd always that tab was only for digital
Any progress on this?
N.B. The fix in /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf mentioned above does nothing
for me.

Hmm, it's already set to S32_LE in src/conf/cards/ICE1712.conf , but
it's later overridden in src/conf/alsa.conf (at runtime). This presents
a thorny situation. Raising the issue upstream.

Status: Confirmed
With help from a friendly person in #alsa on freenode I got a (rather
simple) fix.
In /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf
defaults.pcm.dmix_format S16_LE
was changed to
defaults.pcm.dmix_format S32_LE
Then everything worked.
