While this bug is being looked at, for my ubuntu setup, I installed
smplayer2 (currently available via ppa at

with mplayer2 seems to avoid this fontconfig issue.

I unchecked "Subtitles > Use SSA/ASS library" and now it is able to open.
A quickfix until the problem is solved, and a hint to the ones who will repair
it, or at leasts I hope so.

I'm having the same problem when using smplayer, too. It started just a
few days ago.
But it works fine when I open mplayer2 via terminal. I'm unaware of the
versions of my software, but everything seems uptated to at least a few hours
ago via update manager (Ubuntu 12.04).

I've just compiled the latest svn (35369) and -fontconfig is still working.
For mplayer2, yes they removed that option some months ago, and now
smplayer (from svn r4683) doesn't use -fontconfig with mplayer2.
