while installing (it would seem various "recommends" are actually

This is looking like either a display driver problem (using XVideo?) or
possibly broken libavcodec (e.g. from Deb Multimedia) installation.
Without further information, there is really nothing we can do.

Did you try any other Qt4 application? If playback works, then VLC
itself should be working just fine...

see Question #211834, same symptom in quantal. in installing quantal, i
installed ubuntu core, then did apt-get --no-install-recommends install
lubuntu-desktop. after reinstalling again without --no-install-
recommends, the problem was no longer present. this bug was filed
earlier, i had install
