I also encountered this problem in 8.10 release.
After installation newly, I wanted to change the mac address as the same as
ricardo, by editing /etc/network/interfaces. And this way worked when I was
using 8.04 release.
I added hwaddress ether xx:xx. for eth0, reboot and run "ifconfig". Then
i haven't upgraded to ubuntu 8.10 beta yet... i'll try with a live cd
and tell you...
