I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and ran into both these bugs. I added the
precise-proposed repository, updated paraview, and both these issues
have been fixed. I can read STL files and no longer get a huge error
list when starting paraview.

Accepted paraview into precise-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/paraview/3.14.1-1ubuntu1.1 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.
