I don't know if this will help or not.
See bug #116870. There may be glibc issues with audacity. Or maybe not.
Under my Gutsy install, Audacity doesn't load at all, and here is the
backtrace.
It may be a stability problem that started in Feisty and has magnified in
Gutsy.

My roommate is having the same problem, and it has repeated multiple
times. Seemingly at random times while working with Audacity on Fiesty
on his new computer, it will crash, hard. Not just Audacity, but the
whole system. He has to hard reboot to be able to do anything. It's only
