Installing lubuntu-desktop draws in xfce4-notifyd, which overrides
notify-osd in lightdm and in unity session.
Removing xfce4-notifyd fixes that in unity session, but now lubuntu uses
notify-osd as well.
Could they exist side by side, with clear definitions which session uses
which?

I did have gnome fallback and lubuntu-desktop installed from before the
upgrade (don't know which brings in xfce4-notifyd?), and it wasn't a
problem. I think the upgrade screwed that up.

The first screenshot looks like xfce4-notifyd to me. If you would prefer
to use notify-osd I would remove that package, otherwise it can be a bit
of a race for who gets control of desktop notifications first.
