FYI: The upstream kernels were causing my machine to not boot properly so I removed them. I rebooted on the regular 12.10 kernel. I went back to alsamixer and disabled "Auto-mute" to get my speakers working. Surprisingly, after making this change audio works correctly again, even auto-muting the s

I should also mention that installing the upstream kernel as recommended above did indeed fix the problem, but: 1) I did *not* get an additional boot option at start, but rather it seems to have clobbered my original one, and 2) whatever window I interacted with--LibreOffice, wireless applet, Chrom
