FYI: The upstream kernels were causing my machine to not boot properly
so I removed them.
I rebooted on the regular 12.10 kernel. I went back to alsamixer and
disabled "Auto-mute" to get my speakers working. Surprisingly, after

I should also mention that installing the upstream kernel as recommended
above did indeed fix the problem, but: 1) I did *not* get an additional
boot option at start, but rather it seems to have clobbered my original
one, and 2) whatever window I interacted with--LibreOffice, wireless
applet, Chrom
I was able to fix this on my fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 on my
ThinkPad T530 by running "alsamixer", making sure all of the levels were
up, and disabling "auto-mute". Now the speakers work fine.

Thanks Joseph! The upstream kernel does in fact appear to fix my audio
problem. Built-in speakers work, headphones continue to work correctly.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
