Regarding VM:s your best bet is Virtualbox with the guest driver. I'm not sure
if these instructions help on 12.04 as well:

Sorry can't test precise anymore, my machine runs Quantal and when
trying to run Unity on a Precise VM it fallsback all the time to unity-
2d so can't really test if the unity fix works. Maybe someone else knows
how to try or how to tell the VM not to fallback to unity-2d?
