Did anyone ever find a solution to this. I now have the same problem
with Hardy & also after upgrading to Intrepid Beta. This drive worked
fine when I ran gentoo and I have also just tested it by installing

The discussion in this thread continued, the most important points:
I must revise what I have said.
I can only rip audio if I add the -g parameter, no matter what
cdparanoia version I use.
One interesting thing is, that with my other scsi cd drive

Ripping the cd works fine if I add the "-g" parameter
(the problem is that programs which use cdparanoia do not set this parameter):

Testing /dev/sg0 for SCSI/MMC interface
The following lines get written to syslog when using cdparanoia:

So since cdparanoia is effectively broken since edgy I invested some time to
solve this issue
(at least for me).

I haven't observed the freeze, but using 3.10+debian~pre0-5 (and some
prior versions) produces no audio. Using sound-juicer to rip a CD
results in barely audible white noise with compression artifacts.

I can confirm both the problem and the downgrade fix on my machine. I'm
running Edgy i386 on a Dell Inspiron E1505. Haven't checked Feisty yet,
but I trust that it will be fine if Jan's LiveCD worked.

I booted my PC recently with the current Feisty Live CD and everything
went fine when I tried to rip some audio tracks with Sound Juicer, so I
suppose that Feisty seems to be not affected by this bug.

I can confirm this bug on Edgy AMD64.
If I try to rip Audio CDs with Sound Juicer with the described version
of cdparanoia, then:
- first it happens absolutely nothing for approximately 10-20 sec. when I press
the "Rip"-Button
- then my PC freezes completely for a few seconds
