I tried the 3.6.0-030600rc7-generic kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6-rc7-quantal/
It failed in the same manner as the 3.2.0 kernel. It also booted ok with
acpi=off.
