that happens to me too.
I use ubuntu 12.10 adm64 with nvidia geforce 8400GS
that happens only the first time i turn on the computer. while changing users
afterwards, i dont see the artifacts anymore.

Confirming.
When I log in for the first time, regular patterns are displayed before the
desktop is displayed. If I log in again after a restart, I briefly get a
corrupted screen with fragments of applications of the previous session. Using
Ubuntu 12.10 with nvidia-current.
