This bug influences me as well but i have only the problem with fonts.
I'm not sure that this refers to thunderbird directly (i have
thunderbird 17.0.5 on ubuntu 12.10)

FYI was having exactly same problem (hang at startup, ESource* error
messages), also solved by uninstalling thunderbird-couchdb pkg.

And after that, Thunderbird works again.

I tried to install the latest beta version of thunderbird 16 via the
official ppa - with the same result as seen above.
I disabled the ppa and am now back on the official thunderbird 15 build
of quantal.

got the same problem after upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 beta1. My output looks
like this:
