I didn't have the file /etc/acpi-support, instead I made the change in
/etc/default/acpi-support.

I resolved this issue by making the following changes as recommended on
thinkwiki:
/etc/acpi/suspend.d/10-thinkpad-standby-led.sh
* Add to the bottom of the file: /etc/init.d/powernowd stop
/etc/acpi/resume.d/90-thinkpad-unstandby-led.sh
* Add to the bottom of the file: /etc/init.d/powernowd star

The amd64 architecture is for AMD64 or EM64T (core 2 duo has EM64T) so
it makes sense to use it. I also see what you describe--for a second I
get a flashing cursor then it dies.

I was not aware there were T60p's with AMD architecture. For the
record, I have a t60p with a core duo (x86/32) and an ATI FireGL 5200
card, and I see the same thing. More specifically, as the machine is
coming back up, I see what looks like a flash of virtual terminal, and
the backlight comes on
