I use Try Ubuntu always - often want to fiddle with partitions or be
sure of which one it's installing to.
I have to say that the last time I ever saw the message was when I used
a cd.

Do you mean the message during the shutdown process that says something
along the lines of 'please remove the cd if any and press return'?
I noticed that this did not appear but when only when I choosed the 'Try
Ubuntu' menu option. Do you recall which one you choose?
