In the short term it might be interesting to find out whether adding:
HorizSync 30-70
VertRefresh 50-160
to the Section "Monitor" part of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf make any difference.
You will then need to restart gdm (ctrl-alt-backspace might do it).

HorizSync 30-70
VertRefresh 50-160
Look at the refresh ranges the monitor said it could do:
31.50-37.90 kHz
50.00-70.00 Hz
