The issue with the silent loss of configuration settings when update-
grub is run is bug #21412.
This report is about the fact that the 'default' boot option is not
updated on upgrade to reflect changes in the number of available boot
options. Retitling to reflect this.

You are right I am new and was too hasty ;-) Thank you for the hint.
I also forgot to mention that there is a comment
"# Put static boot stanzas before and/or after AUTOMAGIC KERNEL LIST"
in the menu.lst file. I hope this is not only valid for debian but also for
ubunto (and other linux distri
