I ran "dropbox update" as root (sudo su) after unsetting http_proxy
and https_proxy. Now Dropbox downloaded and installed.
It gave warning about Dropbox running in unsupported location, but it
still worked.

Well, the proxy is still used for some reason.
Maybe sudo is adding it back ? Verify with "sudo env". If that's the case,
open a root sheel, drop the variables and retry.

in a sub-process.
