I have what I believe is the same problem. I have an Ubuntu 12.04 with
encrypted filesystem, which started displaying the problem after
upgrading to 15.04.
Bizarrely, the screen turns on and correctly shows the encryption
password prompt if I hit the "down" arrow on the keyboard, but not when
hitt
Affects Thinkpad T420s with dual graphics, both in dual-graphics mode
and in discrete-only (NVidia) mode.
Does not affect same hard drive on Thinkpad T430s.

Looks like this made it into 12.10. In my case it IS a duplicate of
#1042225 and hitting escape once for the textual and twice for the
graphical FDE password prompt works for me. I've upgraded from 12.04
(and before this I've been following stable releases). Removing the VT
handoff option off the k
Grub menu not showed at boot, pressing Esc console appear with passphrase
request to unlock sda5_crypt.
Strang thing is that it happens alternatively, one boot fail and the other
works ( the time countdown for automatically boot not working, so have to
choose the boot line and press enter)

In today's build the grub has the large size characters, like removing the
splash entry for the linux line, but the monitor stay off.

Copied over the ProcFB setting from that other bug, then; it's
*possible* that there's a bug preventing the fb driver from loading and
that this is the problem you're seeing, but I think this is unlikely.
The lspci certainly shows that the nouveau driver is loaded.

Is also the machine that have bug 1008684 , shipping an integrated nvidia
geforce 6100.
This problem is present from the firsts releases of Quantal.

To have the system working we need to remove, from the boot line,

the attached files are from a fresh installed system that reproduce the bug,
but apport-collect was run from the unlocked system.
To unlock, simply boot a live session and on nautilus click on the disk, insert
the passphrase, reboot and plymouth is now shown requesting passphrase.
