Problem is fixed in the upstream 3.14 and 3.13.7 kernels by "ACPI / EC:
Clear stale EC events on Samsung systems". This patch was included in
Ubuntu's 3.13.0-17.37 kernel update for Ubuntu 14.04 "Trusty Tahr" and
in Ubuntu's 3.2.0-65.98 kernel update for Ubuntu 12.04 "Precise
Pangolin".

I've updated the BIOS as suggested and it is now suspending when I close
the lid.
I will however try this for a while as I have heard that the process of
updating the BIOS resets something and it does then work for a while.
