Bug is reported every time update manager is run - although does not
appear to affect function of update manager. More a nuisance than a
hinderance.

Weird, I explicitly intercept this exception, since it commonly happens
on dist-upgrades. Can you please attach /usr/share/apport/apport-gtk
here? Also, can you please upgrade your system to the latest packages
and try again?
