FYI, the new usbmuxd is available in Debian experimental. libimobiledevice
1.1.4 may be available also in experimental shortly, if Ubuntu want it, and if
I find a sponsor :-)
Both packages introduce a soname change, so at least a rebuild of the stack is
needed.

The reason in precise was that gvfs was not ported to the new API and
wouldn't build with it, that's fixed in the current version
Note that from http://www.libimobiledevice.org/ you will need to update
usbmuxd before libimobile device

Seb, you said there was some reason why this couldn't be done? Can you
comment on that here.
