Now attaching dmesh output with drm.debug turned OFF. It turns out that
this boots X as well, so I guess there's something in that custom kernel
that resolves the issue - what did you change?

With drm.debug turned ON, I get the attached dmesg output.
Interestingly, X starts working again.
