I wanted to update my situation from what I stated in #44.
A complete reinstall of 11.04 from scratch fixed the problem for me.
On the same machine, I am running kernel 2.6.38-8 with NVidia 173
version of the drivers.
The system boots into X now and I can open as many windows as I like
without r
Reverting to 170 is not an option for me as the Nvidia kernel module
will not load since the Natty upgrade to kernel 2.6.38.8.
I have to run Nvidia 270.41.06 provided directly from Nvidia just to get
X to load and arrive at a desktop.
Like others, resizing the window (smaller) does help to get th
Problem exists in 10.10 fresh install.
All four steps in #6 were necessary to correct the issue.
Seems like this would be a fairly easy fix to incorporate.

I installed kde 4.3.3 yesterday and will continue to test for this. So
far, in the brief time I have looked at it this morning, things are
looking better.
