I can also confirm that installing libsane-extras on my machine running
Karmic has caused my Epson V200 scanner to stop working.
The same *epkowa* files listed in Dylan's comment above were removed
from my machine when I installed current version of libsane-extras from
(I think) karmic-backports.
I am curious if anyone who was experiencing this problem with the
ipw2200 module has noticed a relationship between CPU temp and driver
stability. (For laptops, that is. Probably no effect on desktops.)

branching their kernel more than already done, especially if the user
base affected by further diluting developer resources is larger than the
user base affected by the buggy fglrx package.

You are indeed supposed to see "ATI Technologies" reported by fglrxinfo and
glxinfo. The "DRI R300 Project" that you're seeing may indicate you are
somehow still loading the open source ATI driver, since that is what I see
reported by glxinfo, and I am only using xserver-xorg-video-ati,
