@p4man: I have a 120GB Maxtor (6Y120L0). Reallocated Sector Count
Threshold = 63, Value = 191 sectors, so palimpsest gives me the "Disk
has many bad sectors warning" each time I log in.
So I ran the manufacturer's diagnostic tool "SeaTools for Windows" in
Long DST mode which reads each sector, and
I have switched to KDE from Gnome because Gnome was taking too long to
start up, and this did fix the problem for me. So I think it is a
problem related to Gnome. In either case Compiz didn't make a
difference.

My "fix" for this has been to switch to KDE. It took a couple of days to
get used to, but is probably worth trying out before switching distros.

I can confirm Zenigata's fix worked for me.
64-bit firefox was hanging on sites with Flash. To fix:
1) Uninstall flashplugin-nonfree if installed through synaptic.
2) Get a list of any Flash remains with nspluginwrapper -l
3) For me this showed a combination of 0.91.94 and 0.91.95 versions. I man
