Same issue, Ubuntu 8.04, Dell Optiplex GX270
Here's my dmesg from the time I put in the stick (I have no CD-ROM drive, but
I know on a hard-ware level that it uses a similar transfer bus to PATA for the
front ports, but this problem occurs on the back USB ports as well).

I can confirm this bug, but when I ran Azureus and it went through the
first-time setup wizard, it worked fine (I ran it under sudo su).
I reinstalled both azureus packages in synaptic. After getting through
the configuration wizard--it works just fine again.

I just did a fresh install on a blank OEM hard drive from a USB drive.
It meshed my hard drive and USB into one drive one time, and on a
separate attempt to install it, it read the drive as USB flash as well.
When I set the jumper on my hard drive to master, the problem went away.
