It would be nice to get a /var/log/Xorg.log capture, just to show that
it is really the same thing.

I have swapped out the NVS 310 graphics

Every few hours the desktop freezes. I can still login via ssh, htop
shows one process running at 100%. The process is shown in red,
indicating a kernel thread. No response to ctrl-alt-f1 or to service
lightdm restart.
