I am testing Edgy. I tried starting xmms in a terminal but no error
messages are being displayed. Xmms will play the first file fine but
will freeze when trying to open the second on the playlist or when I
manually select the second file

That is the intel centrino ICH6 if that helps

I own a compaq v4000 notebook and when I click the volume control button
while gnome is about done loading the upper left hand bar will become
unresponsive. Everything from the clock to the speaker icon. The menu
items on the far left are unaffected
