and put
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
at the bottom of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and sound works now.

@Bryan: you're right, there are no internal speakers on these boxes,
that's ok though, all the testing I've done has been with a set of
external speakers plugged into the rear output jack. Periodically I've
also tried the front headphone jack.

I followed the advice in post #30 and that seems to have solved the
problem. On a side note, since I expect to run 10.04 LTS for a long
time, eventually I will probably need to undo what I've done. I've
searched around on the net about "pinning" version numbers on certain

I confirm that the the suggestion in Post #30 is helpful. I'm trying to

Optiplex 980, no sound has ever emanated from this machine (or any of

As a followup, I can mount the shares automatically on boot if I put an
entry in fstab, but that's not desirable when the laptop is out of the
network containing the samba shares. Better if I can get nautilus
bookmarks for them and only mount them when I know they're available.
Thanks,

that's only a guess.

Mostly just want to confirm this problem. I have two monitors of
different sizes and in 8.10 the background just stretched across both
screens and filled them up completely--no hassles. I've tried all of
the various options and can't replicate this behavior in 10.04. I even

I'm running 0.9.56 on Gutsy amd64. In quicken 2001 basic, the print

I reinstalled 7.10 and figured out how to change the mask in
/proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey. I tried a number of things:
echo "0x8f" > hotkey #Fn+F7 stops showing up in /var/log/acpi, but
video switch still doesn't work.

Well, I just finished installing 7.04 and indeed the video switching
works just fine there.
In 7.10, I suspect it's a problem with the hotkey keymask in
/etc/modprobe.d/thinkpad_acpi.modprobe
the contents of which are, by default:
