On my laptop I do *not* have this problem. It has the stable NVIDIA
driver from the Ubuntu 14.04 repo, 340.96. My laptop has an NVidia
Quadro K2000M.
My office computer *does* have the problem. It also runs Ubuntu 14.04
but has the NVidia driver installed with the NVidia CUDA toolkit,
352.63.
Running the SMART tests from the system BIOS directly (not loading
Ubuntu) it appears to be failing all the tests. It appears to be a
hardware problem. Strange that it only started acting up now.

I've installed smartmontools and have run two short tests and am running
a long test now. The SMART log knows of the recent problems but the
tests are not discovering any problems. The problems recorded in the
SMART log are "READ DMA" commands. Is there anything in particular I
should be looking
Weird. Just after I said it's only happened twice in a week, it
happened a 3rd time, minutes after rebooting from the 2nd occurence.

Oh no, the sound still disappears, it just takes longer than it used to.
But the video problem is persistent. It doesn't appear like anyone has
any idea what the problem is, so if it does not vanish on the upgrade to

Water effects are still a problem on my computer although in a slightly
different way. They do not work at all on display 0 -- in fact if I
start them on display 0, the screen image becomes "fried". Display 1
becomes unusable.

recently, I noticed that ktorrent spawned instances of mplayer that was
using 100% of system resources. My laptop was overheating and it
eventually locked-up. I rebooted, loaded up ktorrent again and the

Probably totally unrelated, but the compiz "expo" utility, when run from
the 2nd display, it does not centre properly. My 1st display is

Something has changed. The KDE apps like amarok no longer crash. They
still output the same error messages, but it doesn't cause them to crash
anymore. The only major changes since I started this thread is I've
kept updating the distribution, and finally got the native NVIDIA
drivers working. I
