I really appreciate your efforts with this.
I think the logical solution to edit an existing snapshot is using the
snapshot-edit command, it seems counter intuitive to have to use any
other means.
Giving it a bit more thought I would actually consider the current behaviour a

type , MAC, memory or other tangible item that won't break the snapshot.

Retaining old machine types would certainly be better than not, but moving a VM
with snapshots outside the Ubuntu ecosystem would still break it (say to Debian
or Mint).
I imagine setting 'pc' for machine type would be better for snapshots, then at
least you have half a chance of

Bit of an update, there seems to be two different but linked problems
I have downloaded qemu-system-86 ubuntu source and patched support back in for
zesty, all snapshots now work.
However I still cannot edit snapshots using virsh , get same error.

machine types in cosmic (18.10) - I can now no longer run any snapshots
I made when I was running 17.04.

Can confirm Woodrow Shen's workaround works for me too, (also tested ok
