I only tested bionic, the stereo playback works seemingly flawless. The
low volume problem is indeed still present, but as Dave pointed out,

The 5min time out had exactly the same behavior.
I was this time playing music while closing the lid. The music was never
interrupted and the light never went out of the screen. The kernel knows the
lid has been closed:

Happens to me on Kubuntu 9.04 Alpha5 (x64) as well when I forgot the 'e'

This time I tried a normal restart from the User Switcher Applet.
But the system wouldn't shut down properly, the progressbar turned from left to
right, more than it used to, then the console cursor blinked fast in upper
right corner of the screen.

It started 2 hours ago, it's really weird!
I left my Desktop machine, with wired internet, for an half an hour or
so.
The screensaver was on and seem like it had freezed, moving the mouse,
touching a key, pressing ctrl+alt+backspace, ctrl+alt+delete...didn't
work !!

I can confirm this problem on a Thinkpad T60 Core2 T7200 with Ubuntu
8.10 2.6.27-9-generic. At boot, the CPU scales nicely, but when I set
the resolution for a second monitor in the gnome preferences, both CPU
are set to scale 1000MHz to 1000MHz reported in cpufreq-info.
