Fixed the problem, but perhaps the default settings should be corrected?
System -> Preferences -> Sound
Output tab
select "Internal Audio Analog Stereo"
Connector should be "Analog Output", not headphones
My suspicion is that the video card (ATI Radeon Mobility 4670) is the
problem since it shows
