I had the same problem -- virtualbox kept crashing "soon" -- (NOHZ=off
seemed to help some, but I'm not sure if its real or anecdotal). I was
running ubuntu 11.10 oneiric.
I updated to:
3.0.0-17
vbox 4.1.2
and it happens less often (I can get some work done) -- but still
happens occassion
Thanks a lot -- I've been banging my head against the wall (I've used
passwordless rsh for 20 years)
It worked on old ubuntus and new ones -- not that one!!

I saw "use backports" comment to fix the problem.
On a Lenovo X61, I upgraded to backports today...no difference.
Original wifi driver: 1.2.0, backported driver 1.2.26k -- no difference
in the led state...
Took a while to figure out wifi was working but the led was not...
