Issue happened again after today's system update.
The problem is causing the Nvidia device to not even been detected:
frontend@frontend:~$ lsmod | grep nvidia
frontend@frontend:~$ sudo lshw -c video | grep 'configuration'

Don't see how this is the same issue I am not doing a upgrade just and
update. I have been up and running on 18.04 for several months now and
only see the issue if there is a an update that requires the system to
be reset or sometimes when the system boots with the TV off. I do not
get the GDM prom
I do have auto login enabled on this machine but after reading the bug
report you mentioned I don't think these are the same at all. In my
situation the display is completely black with no ability to to do any
of this:

Remove one line so you only have following:

installed mcc today after making sure my install of 13.10 was updated.

Control centre fails to start beca
Gave up on trying to use this, switched over to indicator-cpufreq
instead as it works well with 13.10:

Just make sure to add it to the start up programs list so it runs are
boot up. Work great with Unity desktop and gives all the functionality
of older tool
Backend setup still fails to work correctly when using the icon
launcher, tuner cards continue to give error detection message.
When using the sudo mythtv-setup command, the prompt box comes up right
away asking if you want to stop backend. With the launch icon, the
prompt message doesn't come up
Evolution was purged.

Actually not 100% corrected, doesn't always ask for the sudo password to
stop the backend and when it doesn't the setup can't take control of

So not sure now if this is an issue with Grub2 or the actual update
apps. Installed synaptic which showed all the latest packages on the
system however the Linux 3.9.0-6 was listed but not actually downloaded
yet. Checked it for install and it downloaded. Rebooted system and now

So the Mythtv-backend-setup icon option still hangs and you have to give
sudo command in terminal to launch backend setup.
However did get the backend to finally run at start up as well as get
the frontend to connect properly. Basically had to treat the install as
if it was totally manual. Purged

issue decreases greatly when compiz effects are disabled using compiz config
setting manager.
Only way to recover is to control+alt+F3 and give shutdown -r command.

Hello,
Have tried again with the full version and although this time the
upgrade went smoothly the performance of the system was very poor -
video playback and audio was choppy. I finally did a clean install with
8.10 which seems to be working much better.

While trying to upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10beta process hangs on shutting
down bluetooth devices, which is funny as this box has no bluetooth
devices so the process is not running anyway. When you reboot system
hangs and you must insert boot disk. At this point if you choose to
